In most of her films, she acted opposite with her husband Dharmendra or Rajesh Khanna or Dev Anand. The "Dream Girl" of Bollywood became popular with this name long before her film Dream Girl came into existence. She has acted in more than 150 films.

Smriti Irani was born on 23 March 1976 in New Delhi, India. She was born to a Bengali mother, Shibani Bagchi, and a Punjabi-Maharashtrian father, Ajay Kumar Malhotra.
She completed her 12th standard from Holy Child Auxilium School in New Delhi. Later, she enrolled herself in School of Open Learning at the University of Delhi for a bachelor's degree. Smriti married a Parsi businessman, Zubin Irani in 2001. They got their first child in October that year. the couple had their first child, a son. The second child, a daughter came in September 2003. Both their children are learning Parsis.
Smriti has a stepdaughter, Shanelle who is Zubin Irani's daughter from his previous marriage with a coordinator and former beauty contestant Mona Irani who is a law student at Georgetown University in the United States.
